Arbutin (C12H16O7), also known as arbutin, is a component extracted from the leaves of bear fruits of Rhododendron plants. It is also found in pears, wheat and other plants, because it can inhibit tyrosinase activity, thereby hindering the formation of melanin and has a good effect on whitening, so it is used in cosmetics and maintenance products. Ursolin also has diuretic and urinary tract sterilization functions, so it is also used in urinary tract disinfectants. Ursolin has two types, alpha and beta. The inhibitory effect of alpha on tyrosinase activity is about 10 times stronger than that of beta. Although ursolin has whitening effect, improper dosage may promote the production of melanin. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of China announced on June 5, 2001 that the addition limit of ursolin for whitening was 7%.
Function
