Adenosine is a natural nucleotide, an intermediate product of body metabolism, and one of the important active components in the body. Its action is achieved by activating adenosine receptors (A receptors). In the atrium, sinoatrial node, and atrioventricular node, adenosine activates G protein-coupled potassium channels by binding to A receptors, increasing K+ efflux, hyperpolarizing the cell membrane and reducing autonomicity. It can also significantly increase the level of cGMP, prolong the ERP of the atrioventricular node and slow down the conduction, inhibit the early and late depolarization caused by sympathetic nerve or isoproterenol and play an antiarrhythmic effect.
